For over ten years, Belle has lead collaborative, socially-engaged public art projects that respond to a specific time and space. She is interested in creating spaces where print, protest, people, plants and places overlap. Her work crosses media and addresses subjects as diverse as the media, finance, value, food and medicine. Belle is interested in the the crossroads where policy-making meets the living room, she works back and forth between the personal and the political.
Belle's current work explores ways in which we can build resilience to austerity and the ongoing assault on our natural environment by developing the relationship between the plants that grow around us (or that we cultivate), our bodies and well‐being.
Belle's work crosses many media. She graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London in 2001 with a first class BA in Art History. In 2008, she received an award from the Arts and Humanities Research Council to study for her MA Fine Art at University College Falmouth.
Belle has worked in New York City, Buenos Aires, Cuba, Geneva and across the UK. She has won awards from the Brooklyn Arts Council, The Bower Trust, The Sandra Blow Fellowship and has completed many commissions for among others, Groundswell Community Mural Project, The New York City Department of Transportation, Brooklyn Public Library, B-Side Multi-Media Arts Festival, Glastonbury Festival of Performing Arts & The House Of Fairytales.
Her work has been written about in the New York Times and featured in On the Wall: Four Decades of Community Murals in New York City, an anthology published in 2008 by Janet Braun-Reinitz and jane Weissman. In 2015, Belle was artist-in-residence at Utopiana in Geneva, Switzerland as part of the project, Plantopic.
A multi-year collaboration with the Seed SistAs will finally see the publication in April of the Sensory Herbal Handbook, full of Belle’s beautiful illustrations. Published by Watkins.
