Funny Ole World…

I am working with Sensory Solutions to design a herbal tarot. Sixty cards will each represent one indigenous British medicinal herb.

I’ve been making the most of the budding, flowering and sunshine and have been drawing the plants where they grow on most days lately. I’ve been keeping an eye out for Mullein around where I live but not found any and I finally put a call on Facebook a couple weeks ago to see if anyone could help me locate one.   Nancy Thompson (who I had never met, but who I made friends with on Facebook thinking she was my cousin of the same name) responded and on Monday, I went to make friends with Nancy in real life and draw the mullein that has made her garden its home.

By the time I got to Helston, it was pouring, but I pressed on to Penzance thinking I would just do a bit of shower dodging. Once there, the rain set in. For a few hours, I was able to draw huddled under an umbrella rigged up on a bamboo pole as a tiny shelter. It was uncomfortable work and the rain got heavier and heavier until I had to give up! Imagining I would finish the drawing from photos in my studio, I packed up…

Nancy's Mullein

But I’d come all the way to Penzance and didn’t want to waste the journey, so I wandered into town and checked out The Exchange. By the time I was done there, the sky was starting to clear a bit. On the drive home, the sun came out and I took a spontaneous turn down to the coast for an evening swim. I parked up and admired the burdock

and this little fellow…

And then wandered down to the sea. There was mullein everywhere!

I laughed to myself. Went for a swim.

And then settled down to draw Aaron’s rod in the evening sun.
