The kitchen smells incredible today. I'm brewing up some hawthorn ketchup. It's more like a brown sauce or a sweet and sour sauce really. Flavoured with cloves, nutmeg, pepper and cinnamon and packed with the medicine offered to us by these common hedgerow trees. Hawthorn berries are one of the best cardio- vascular tonics available to us from the plant world. Hawthorn berries adjust blood pressure, strengthening the rhythm of the heart and toning heart tissue. They also support the emotional aspects of the heart; a great remedy for grief and for finding courage. What's wonderful about the sweet and sour sauce is that its delicious, making it super simple to incorporate herbal heart health into your daily routine through your food.

Elecampane (Inula helenium) was our herb of the month in the roots sessions last week. Here's a beautiful 5 year old root being made into medicine. Elecampane is known by the Chinese as the Strength of Nine. Its a pokey number, strong, bitter and hot. Its a powerful herb for moving stagnation. In the lungs, digestive system and the spirits.

Alter to roots. Winter darkness is our time to embrace root medicine. On the new moon, the energy of the plant drops down into the earth. The perfect time for roots harvesting.
🌑🌑🌑
Like our root chakra, root medicine is deeply tied to nourishment. The plants roots seek out nourishment from the soil. In winter plants energy is stored and gathered in the roots in starches like inulin, preparing for the shoots of leaves, flowers and fruit in the coming seasons. Inulin is a valuable prebiotic for us. Undigested in our small intestine, it makes its way to our colon where it feeds the good bacteria in our guts. Literally nourishing us that way, and also having the chain effect that when our gut flora is balanced, we absorb the nutrients of our food more fully. The compounds in inulin are also anti-parasitic, building our resilience to worms and other parasites that might like a home with us.
With the energy of last night's 🌑new moon🌑, today would be a great day for harvesting dandelion roots. Such an abundant medicine right under our feet and full of inulin.
